Back-to-School Conversations: Helping Your Child Navigate AI

As students head back to school, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming part of more classroom conversations. From homework help to brainstorming ideas, many children are hearing about or experimenting with AI in ways that may be new to both them and their parents.

If you're feeling unsure about how to approach the topic, you're not alone. The good news is that you do not need to understand every AI tool or keep up with every new app. What matters most is creating opportunities for open, honest conversations with your child.
Here are a few ways to start those conversations as the new school year begins.
Start With Curiosity, Not Assumptions
Your child may know more about AI than you realize, or they may know very little. Rather than assuming they are already using it, start by asking questions that invite conversation.
You might ask:
Have you heard your friends talking about AI?
Have any of your teachers mentioned it?
Have you ever used an AI tool?
What do you think AI is?
These questions are not about catching your child doing something wrong. They are about understanding their experiences and learning alongside them. By approaching the conversation with curiosity instead of concern, you create space for honest answers and future conversations.
Focus on Values Before Technology
Technology will continue to change, but the values we hope to teach our children remain the same.
Whether your family is talking about AI, social media, or another new technology, conversations about honesty, responsibility, kindness, and critical thinking are always relevant. Helping children think through questions like, "Is this helping me learn?" or "Would I feel comfortable telling my teacher how I completed this assignment?" encourages thoughtful decision-making that extends beyond any single app or tool.
When children understand the values behind your expectations, they are better prepared to make responsible choices even when you're not there to guide them.
Learn About Your School's Expectations
Every school, classroom, and teacher may have different expectations when it comes to AI.
Some educators may encourage students to use AI as a brainstorming tool, while others may limit its use for certain assignments. Because these expectations can vary, it's helpful to encourage your child to ask questions if they are ever unsure.
You can also take time to review your school's technology policies or ask teachers how AI may be discussed or used throughout the year. Knowing what is expected helps families avoid confusion and supports students in making informed choices.
Keep the Conversation Going
One conversation at the beginning of the school year is a great start, but it does not have to be the last.
As AI continues to evolve, your child's experiences with it will likely change as well. Checking in from time to time keeps the conversation open and lets your child know they can come to you with questions or concerns.
Simple questions can help keep the discussion going:
Have you learned anything new about AI at school?
Has one of your teachers talked about using AI?
What do your classmates think about it?
Is there anything about AI that has surprised or confused you?
These small conversations can build trust over time and help your child think critically about the technology they encounter.

Growing Together in an AI World
While the technology will continue to evolve, one thing remains constant: children benefit from having trusted adults who are willing to listen, ask questions, and learn alongside them.
You do not need to have all the answers. By staying curious, keeping communication open, and focusing on the values that matter most to your family, you can help your child navigate new technology with confidence throughout the school year.
