Support for Parents of Children with Mental Health Challenges in Pennsylvania

Parents Helping Parents

When you connect with the Parent Alliance, you’re connecting with parent support for families across Pennsylvania navigating children’s mental health challenges.

You’re talking with a Parent Peer,  a parent who has sat in confusing meetings, worried late at night about their child, and worked hard to figure out how to help.

Parent Peers use their lived experience, along with professional training, to help other parents navigate systems and feel less alone along the way.

Our team lives in communities across Pennsylvania. Some of us live in areas with many services nearby. Others live in places where finding help can mean long drives, long waitlists, or limited options.

Wherever you live, we understand how challenging it can be to find the right support for your child.

Families Come in Many Forms

Families look different in every community, and the Parent Alliance reflects that.

Our team includes parents, grandparents, adoptive parents, step-parents, and others who have stepped into the role of raising a child.

What connects us isn’t a specific family structure — it’s the experience of loving a child who is struggling and wanting to do everything possible to help them.

Our families also come from different cultural backgrounds and life experiences. Those differences shape how we see the world and how we support one another.

Your family will be welcomed and respected here too.

You Don’t Need a Diagnosis

Parents sometimes hesitate to reach out because they believe they need a diagnosis first.

You don’t.

Sometimes parents contact us when their child’s behavior has changed. Sometimes it’s when school becomes stressful. Sometimes it’s simply because a parent feels like something isn’t quite right.

If something about your child’s behavior or emotions is worrying you, it’s okay to ask questions and look for support.

Early support can make a meaningful difference.

A Parent-Led Community

Our approach is known as parent peer support, a model that connects families with trained parents who have lived experience navigating children’s mental health challenges.

The PA Parent and Family Alliance is part of Allegheny Family Network, an organization founded by families who believed parents should have a stronger voice in the systems serving their children.

What began as parents supporting one another locally grew into a statewide effort to ensure families across Pennsylvania have access to guidance and connection.

Today, Parent Peers across the state continue that tradition — parents helping parents find their way forward.

A Community That Believes in Parents

Behind every Parent Peer is a community that believes families deserve support.

Donors and supporters help ensure that parents across Pennsylvania can connect with someone who understands what they’re going through.

Because of their generosity, parents across the state can reach out and have someone in their corner.

Because no parent should have to figure this out alone.

The Values That Guide Us

At the PA Parent and Family Alliance, our values guide every aspect of our work, shaping how we support families, collaborate with partners and donors, and nurture our dedicated team of parent professionals. These values are not just for the families we serve, they define how we work together and create impact, both internally and externally.

We believe in the power of community, fostering connections among families, our staff, and our supporters to ensure everyone feels seen, heard, and supported. Integrity is the foundation of all we do, driving us to act with honesty, empathy, and transparency, whether with the parents/primary caregivers we serve, our partners, or one another. Through leadership, our team of parent professionals inspires and empowers parents, while also leading with vision and purpose within our organization and the broader community.

Our passion and courage drive us to face difficult challenges, speak up for what is right, and take bold steps to create meaningful change. With idealism, we believe in the possibility of a better world where every child has access to the mental health support they need, and we work tirelessly to bring that vision to life. Our focus on impact ensures that every program, resource, and partnership creates tangible, lasting benefits for the families and communities we serve.

We approach our work with creativity, developing innovative solutions to meet the unique needs of families and the evolving challenges they face. We welcome every background and story, honoring the unique strengths, experiences, and perspectives of every family, team member, partner, and donor. At the heart of it all is communication - we listen with intention, share openly, and collaborate effectively to ensure we move forward together.

These values unite us as a team and as a community, strengthening our mission to create a world where all children and families can thrive. Through our commitment to these principles, we ensure that every family, partner, and staff member is part of a movement that truly makes a difference.
